A larger stage to address the issues of tourism
The WSF is now one of the major events on the world development calendar. The participants come from across the globe and cover the spectrum of development actors - from the grassroots farmer, to the 'alternate policy expert' to the various levels of implementation and advocacy. This richness of participation provides a unique opportunity to 'mainstream' tourism and services as a development issue per se to what is a virtual captive audience for a week. Given the scale of the event, there is tremendous potential to reach out to the 'passer–by,' engage the expert, build coalitions, agree on positions and to synchronise action. The WSF thus becomes an event for making wider links and for deepening existing coalitions.

The dark side of tourism
"Does tourism need to be mainstreamed in WSF discussions? Is this 'sunshine industry' only for the elite? Changing this 'elite' perception is difficult, but essential. Just like gender and racism, tourism is a 'cross-cutting' theme that impacts us all, particularly the most vulnerable. Tourism does come under GATS, but it needs to be discussed and debated separately. Tourism is all the more dangerous and insidious because often its impact is invisible.

(Established in India)
"EQUATIONS is a non-profit organisation established for research, training and the promotion of holistic tourism. We work towards transforming the inherently exploitative nature of mass commercial tourism. We question the real benefits of tourism to the host communities as well as its socio-cultural and economic impacts. Our activities include documentation, publication, research, seminars and the investigation of alternative tourism policies and structures."
Vision:
"EQUATIONS seeks a world where wealth, resources and benefits are much more equitably distributed between North and South. Our vision of tourism fits within that framework. While there is no one transposable model which will work in all situations, we are working toward tourism which bring economic benefits directly to all segments of the host community, particularly including women and indigenous peoples; is subject to local, democratic control, so that communities are making their own decisions about how tourism should be permitted and regulated; is integrated into other community activities, so that it is culturally appropriate and sensitive to the inequities between hosts and guests; enriches both host (economically, developmentally and in terms of control) and guests (culturally, re-creationally). This is in contrast to many current tourism models, which are imposed from the North, require the extensive use of imports, are overly comrriercialised, and reinforce inequities rather than challenges them. EQUATIONS sees tourism not as a means to bring Southern communities into the Northern mainstream, but rather as one of the ways to work toward a more just world."

Tourism Watch

"Tourism Watch was established in 1975 by the Church Development Service of the Protestant Church in Germany as a worldwide Special Desk for Tourism. As a branch of the Overseas Service, it is involved in training programmes and in solidarity initiatives surrounding the issue of "Third-World" tourism, and it promotes socially and environmentally responsible developments in tourism. Against a background of numerous negative consequences resulting from tourism, TOURISM WATCH questions the assumption that "tourism equals development"."

"The Ecumenical Coalition on Third World Tourism (ECTWT) was founded in 1982 as an outcome of a workshop that took place in Manila in 1980. It was the first workshop to analyse tourism from the perspective of the people of the Third World. All members expressed a consensus that tourism, as it is practised in most parts of the so-called Third World, has `wreaked more havoc than brought benefits'."
